According to S. Tekeli writing for T\u00fcrk Ansiklopedisi, he was born in Cairo in 1526 as the son of a scientist (Some other researchers say Damascus 1521). After a thorough education, and teaching at a madrasa in Cairo, he came to Istanbul, where in 1571 he became chief astrologer (m\u00fcneccimba\u015f\u0131) at the royal court after the death of the occupant of that position.  <\/h4>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-8052133319358801\"\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8052133319358801\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9404454092\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4> Takiy\u00fcddin Efendi pointed out that the old astronomical tables were outdated and proposed the construction of an observatory to prepare new tables. He enlisted the support of Hoca Sa&#8217;d\u00fcddin Efendi, Sultan Murad III&#8217;s teacher, and Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, the grand visier, who convinced the Sultan. Construction started in 1575 and finished in 1577. <\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4> When the comet of 1577 (The same comet was observed by Tycho as well) appeared, the Sultan wanted to know if this was a good omen for the upcoming Persian campaign, or a bad one.  <\/h4>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-8052133319358801\"\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8052133319358801\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9404454092\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4> Takiy\u00fcddin Efendi predicted victory. The army indeed emerged victorious, but when they were on their way back, an epidemic of the plague spread in the country, and decimated the army as well.  <\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4> Whatever the initial reason, \u015feyh\u00fclislam (chief religious adviser of the Sultan) Ahmed \u015eemseddin Efendi, who saw Hoca Sa&#8217;d\u00fcddin Efendi as a rival, claimed that wherever observatories were constructed and men dared to pry into the secrets of the heavens, divine punishment resulted in the form of natural disasters, epidemics or wars. He used the rapid collapse of Ulug Bey&#8217;s empire and the current situation as examples.  <\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4> The Sultan got worried and in 1579 ordered the observatory demolished. This order was executed by the Navy, which destroyed the observatory by cannon fire. The eventual fate of Takiy\u00fcddin Efendi seems to be uncertain; T\u00fcrk Ansiklopedisi gives his death with a questionmark (Istanbul 1585).  <\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4> The Istanbul Observatory was the first and last great observatory in Islam.
